REIDSVILLE, N.C. (Romero Report) — A man is in jail after he allegedly refused to let a woman out of his vehicle during a date on May 12.

At around 10:40 p.m., Rockingham County deputies were alerted to be on the lookout for a beige Infiniti SUV with a woman in the front passenger seat claiming to have been kidnapped.

A deputy located a vehicle matching the description near New Heights Baptist Church on N.C. 14.

He attempted a traffic stop, and the vehicle eventually stopped at Murphy’s USA Gas Station at the Reidsville Walmart.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the woman, appearing distressed, quickly exited the vehicle.

During the investigation, deputies learned that the driver, Garrett Wade Wheeler, and the victim had been on a date.

Wheeler allegedly refused to return the woman home, driving past her residence and continuing to drive despite her repeated pleas to be let out, authorities said.

The woman called 9-1-1 for help during the incident.

The estimated distance Wheeler traveled with the victim in the vehicle while refusing to release her is around 12 miles.

Garrett Wade Wheeler, 44, of Wil-O-Pat Road in Reidsville, was arrested and charged with second-degree kidnapping and false imprisonment.

He was placed in the Rockingham County Detention Facility without bond.
