REIDSVILLE, N.C. (Romero Report) — A former employee of the Reidsville YMCA is facing charges of indecent liberties with a minor.
Zachary Tyson Highsmith, 24, of Rocky Mount, was arrested on May 16 in Matthews by Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s deputies.
Highsmith worked at the YMCA from August 2023 until April 2024, when allegations against him surfaced.
“We were deeply saddened and disturbed to recently learn of allegations that violated our child protection policy against an individual associated with youth sports,” the YMCA said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and family.”
The YMCA said it immediately suspended Highsmith upon learning of the accusations and subsequently reported the matter to authorities.
He was later terminated.
“All background checks on this staff member came back clean, the statement read. “He had no previous record or any other cause for concern in their background, nor did he have any disciplinary issues while working at the YMCA of Greensboro.”
Highsmith is scheduled to appear in Rockingham County District Court on June 12.
