EDEN, N.C. (Romero Report) — Police rescued a 3-year-old from drowning in the Dan River on May 21.
Eden Police were dispatched to Leaksville Landing on Highway 87 for a water rescue around 12:43 p.m.
According to the caller, the child had accidentally fallen into the river from the landing steps and was floating downstream without a life vest.
Upon arrival and a quick search, officers Timothy Knight and Josh Roberts located the child floating face down in the river, the police department said in a Facebook post.
Both officers, in full police gear, entered the water and Officer Roberts grabbed the child and swam to safety with Officer Knight assisting in the rescue.
Once on land, Lieutenant Andy Johnson took the child up the hillside to stable ground, where he and Fireman Mike Farmer started life-saving measures, the post said.
When it became apparent that Rockingham County EMS could not reach the location, the officers sprinted with the child to the ambulance, where the child was handed over to EMS personnel, who continued life-saving efforts.
Patrol officers cleared the road for EMS to transport the child to the hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.
