ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. (Romero Report) — A now-former detention officer has been charged with providing contraband to an inmate in Rockingham County.

On January 17, Rockingham County investigators, with assistance from the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, began investigating an allegation that a detention officers had supplied items deemed “contraband” to an inmate, a news release said.

The release said the detention officer, Neletta Shamell Davis-Barnette, 41, of Reidsville, N.C., was suspended from her duties and then was officially fired on March 15.

Following her arrest, she was brought before a magistrate and was released on an unsecured bond pending her court appearance.

The investigation is ongoing.
