DODSON, N.C. (Romero Report) — Mountain Valley Hospice is calling for volunteers to join their team.

The nonprofit organization offers hospice care, palliative care, and grief support in North Carolina and Virginia.

In North Carolina, they serve the counties of Alleghany, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Iredell, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin.

In Virginia, their service area covers the counties of Carroll, Floyd, Franklin, Grayson, Henry, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Pulaski, and Wythe and the cities of Danville, Galax, and Martinsville.

Mountain Valley says volunteers play a crucial role in providing support to patients and their families during challenging times.

They offer various volunteer opportunities, including:

  • Providing companionship through home visits or visits to nursing facilities
  • Sitting with patients to lend an ear, look at photos, take walks, play cards, or watch television
  • Offering family members a break to attend to their own needs
  • Organizing groups to prepare meals or special treats for patients’ families at Woltz Hospice Home or SECU Hospice Care Center
  • Bringing certified pet therapy dogs to homes and facilities to brighten a patient’s day
  • Delivering birthday cakes, balloons, or flowers to patients on their special day
  • Placing tuck-in support calls to patients and family members to help ensure their needs are being met
  • Using organizational skills as an administrative volunteer for data entry, answering phones, and newsletter mailings
  • Greeting visitors and answering phones at Woltz Hospice Home or SECU Hospice Care Center
  • Crocheting, knitting, or quilting handmade prayer shawls or blankets for patients
  • Assisting with community events and organizing fundraisers for impoverished patients

“Our volunteers are essential members of our care team,” a spokesperson said. “They provide companionship, compassion, and a helping hand to our patients and families, allowing them to focus on making the most of their time together.”
