FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (Romero Report) — A 73-year-old man drowned at Smith Mountain Lake on June 1.
Authorities got a call around 7:40 p.m. reporting that a man had fallen into the water at Magnum Point Marina on Old Salem School Road in Union Hall.
At the time of the call, the man had not resurfaced from the water, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arrival, the Sheriff’s Office started a search, found a body in the lake, and recovered it.
Stephen Sykes, of Littleton, North Carolina, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
Investigators said that while the circumstances surrounding the drowning appear to be from an accidental fall, the death investigation remains active.
