MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Romero Report) — The Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to 16 area students.

Funded through individuals, business donations, community partners, and fundraisers, Charity League said these scholarships aim to reduce the financial burden for deserving students.

“We believe that cost shouldn’t be a prohibitive factor in a student’s pursuit of higher education,” stated Charity League President Brittany Scott. “It’s not just tuition, but books, supplies, and other associated expenses that can add stress to a student’s life.”

The recipients are:

  • Kiara Brown attending James Madison University
  • Ethan Carr attending Radford University
  • Hailey Chitwood attending Bowling Green State University
  • Joseph Fincher attending Virginia Tech
  • Alexis Garten attending The University of Virginia
  • Heaven Garten attending The University of Virginia
  • Elyssa Kancherla attending The College of Willliam & Mary
  • Mallori Lowe attending Norfolk State University
  • Hannah Mitchell attending Lincoln Memorial University
  • Adam Mounkaila attending the University of Virginia
  • Kyndall Nelson attending Virginia Tech
  • Anh Nguyen attending Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Caillie Smith attending James Madison University
  • Princess Terry attending James Madison University
  • Chevon Trotter attending Averett University
  • Eva Underwood attending The University of Virginia

Recipients were selected through a process that included detailing their college plans, demonstrating financial need, showcasing their grade point averages, providing recommendations from guidance counselors, and highlighting community involvement.

The applicants’ information was then reviewed and selected by the scholarship committee.

Next year’s scholarship application process will begin this November online through the Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia.
