MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Romero Report) — 25 historic rental apartments, named the Fayette Street Lofts, are now available for leasing in Uptown Martinsville.
This development, located at the corner of Fayette Street and Moss Street, is the latest project under the “Historic Collective” initiative aimed at addressing the local housing shortage for the area’s workforce community, a news release said.
The building, originally a Winn-Dixie grocery store and later a furniture store, was constructed in 1954 and had been dormant since 2014.
JRS Realty Partners have transformed it into a mixed-use space with 25 residential units, two retail storefronts, and nine new workspace units known as “Make-Your-Space Studios,” which are scheduled to launch in August.
JRS Realty partner John Garland stated, “Our goal has been to transition this building of historic relevance into attractive living environments that are affordable to members of our local workforce.”
The release said the apartments feature modern amenities such as stainless steel appliances, in-unit washers and dryers, individual heating and air-conditioning units heat pumps, ceiling fans, a keyless entry system, and quartz kitchen countertops.

The lofts include a split-level layout with the bathroom, kitchen, and living space on the first level, and an open dedicated sleeping loft above.
The property will feature an outdoor grill and picnic area for tenants.
The lower level of the building will house nine new workspace units designed for small businesses, nonprofits, and local artists.
“These large spaces will provide infinite flexibility to the ‘doers and
dreamers’ of our community, like start-ups fulfilling online orders, an instructor needing a larger studio, or the professional looking for a new office outside the house,” explained JRS Realty partner, Jim Cherney.
Other projects under the Historic Collective include the recently completed School Drive Apartments in Collinsville and the Fieldale School Apartments.
The next project, “One Ellsworth,” will convert the former BB&T building into a mixed-use space with 63 apartments and over 21,000 square feet of commercial space.
