AXTON, Va. (Romero Report) — An 82-year-old woman died on June 24 following a shooting in Axton, according to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said that Margie Watkins, of Axton, succumbed to her injuries and her body has been transported to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

The shooting incident happened on June 22 on Sandy River Road and it involved three women: Watkins, and her two granddaughters.

One of the victims has been released from the hospital, while another remains in ICU.

According to warrants, 31-year-old Telvin Oshea Hairston broke into the home and admitted to shooting the women because they wouldn’t let him have his children.

Hairston also admitted to hitting one of the women in the head with a pistol.

The county’s general district court lists his charges as the following:

  • First-degree murder
  • Two counts of malicious wounding
  • Three counts use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • One count possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • One count of armed burglary and entering a house to rape

Investigators are actively working on the case and will provide updates as more information becomes available.


ORIGINAL STORY — June 22

AXTON, Va. (Romero Report) — A Martinsville man has been arrested following a triple shooting in Axton on June 22.

The Pittsylvania County 9-1-1 center got a report of a shooting in the 2800 block of Sandy River Road at around 2:41 p.m.

Deputies arrived on the scene and said they found three people with gunshot wounds.

The victims were triaged at the scene and flown to area hospitals for treatment.

The suspect, 31-year-old Telvin Oshea Hairston, was arrested without incident by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office shortly after the shooting.

Hairston faces:

  • Three counts of malicious wounding
  • Three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • One count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • One count for armed burglary.

He is currently being held under no bond in the county jail. 

Authorities reported that one of the victims was last known to be in critical but stable condition, while the other two victims were in stable condition.

The incident appears to have began over domestic relations issue, according to the sheriff’s office.

The case remains under investigation, and further details will be provided as they become available.
