HENRY COUNTY, Va. (Romero Report) — On June 28 around 10:52 p.m., the Martinsville/Henry County Communication Center received a call about an individual with a gunshot wound to the leg on Preston Scales Rd.
Deputies from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office responded and found a nine-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to her right leg, just above the ankle.
Deputies administered first aid until the Fieldale-Collinsville Rescue Unit arrived.
The girl was then airlifted to a medical facility in Virginia, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
During the investigation at the residence, Kevon Smith Hairston, the 19-year-old brother of the victim, informed deputies that he had left a loaded firearm unsecured on a bed.
Another child accidentally triggered the firearm, causing it to discharge and injure the girl.
As a result, Kevon Smith Hairston, of Preston Scales Rd., was charged with felony child endangerment and reckless handling of a firearm.
Additionally, Hairston had two outstanding warrants for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle from Martinsville City and contempt of court from Henry County. He is currently held in the Henry County Adult Detention Center with no bond.
