BLACKSTONE, Va. (Romero Report) — Nine Bassett High School cadets recently participated in the 2024 Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) & science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Camp in Blackstone.
Henry County Public Schools (HCPS) said in a Facebook post that they were escorted by JROTC instructors First Sergeant Lonnie Corley and Sergeant Anthony Melton.
The event, a brigade-level challenge for Army JROTC cadets worldwide, took place over seven days at Fort Barfoot, formerly Fort Pickett.

During the camp, the cadets engaged in a variety of activities, including rappelling from a 60-foot tower, obstacle courses, orienteering, archery, water safety, air rifle marksmanship, and drill and ceremonies, HCPS said.
They also participated in STEM projects and various team-building exercises.
According to HCPS, the aim of the JCLC is to challenge cadets in an austere environment, enhancing their leadership, communication, and social skills.
Cadets were placed in leadership positions and evaluated on their performance by the cadre.
