CHATHAM, Va. (Romero Report) — Police Officer Joshua Nathaniel Spencer was placed on paid administrative leave by the Town of Chatham effective July 8.

The decision was announced in a July 12 Facebook post from the town, which stated, “Personnel matters related to current and former employees of the town are strictly confidential. Consequently, no further statements will be made by the town or its officials.”

The following day, July 9, Spencer was arrested, the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

He has been charged with misdemeanor assault and battery against a family member, according to the Pittsylvania County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

His hearing date is set for August 8.

It is important to note that any defendant in a criminal case is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
