DANVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — The Danville Police Department is alerting the public about a phone scam in which callers use the department’s likeness and names of personnel to solicit payments.

The department emphasized in a news release that it will never request payments over the phone.

Authorities urge individuals who receive such calls to hang up immediately and do not provide any personal, medical, or financial information.

The public is reminded that no local, state, or federal entity will call to request money over the phone.

Fraudsters can replicate email addresses and phone numbers, making them appear authentic, the release said.

Recipients are advised to verify any such communications by contacting the entity directly.

Anyone with information regarding this scam is asked to contact Danville Police through various means: patrol at 434-799-6510 (option 4), investigations at 434-799-6508 (option 1, then option 1 again), or by calling 911.

Tips can also be submitted via Crime Stoppers at 434-793-0000, by approaching any officer, through social media, via email at crimetips@danvilleva.gov, or through the crime tips app CARE.

Individuals providing information leading to an arrest and conviction may be eligible for a cash reward.
