BASSETT, Va. (rbs news now) — Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren (COB) has announced its merger with Bassett COB.

The decision reflects Mount Hermon’s vision to be a “light on the hilltop” and move beyond traditional Sunday services, a news release said.

“Church health metrics have evolved, and we must now be the church, reaching out to make a difference in our community,” the release read.

This philosophy has seen the church’s attendance grow from 80 to 150, including the new Hispanic ministry, Monte Hermon, led by pastors Mani and Lupita Cruz.

Bassett COB averages 20 members in their congregation on Sunday, according to the release.

The merger will utilize both church buildings: one for worship, teaching, and outreach, and the other for daycare and nonprofit ventures.

One of the buildings could also become the new home for Monte Hermon.

Mount Hermon COD says the merger and collaboration highlights their commitment to community service, including adopting local schools and supporting international missions.

It also aims to address the critical need for affordable daycare in the area.

“We encourage all Brethren churches to think outside the box and engage with their communities,” the release added. “Mount Hermon and Bassett should be celebrated for this radical faith step, truly making new wine in new wineskins.”
