PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA (rbs news now) — A recount of the June 18 Republican primary is being conducted in Pittsylvania County on August 1.

Congressman Bob Good is contesting the results of the race, where he lost to State Senator John McGuire for the fifth congressional district seat.

McGuire defeated Good by a margin of 374 votes, prompting the incumbent to file a petition for the recount, a news release reported.

Pittsylvania County is one of 24 localities within the fifth district performing the recount, with results expected on the night of August 1.

Conducting the recount are 23 county residents, with one unable to participate due to illness, who were summoned by the court based on their participation in the June 18 primary, according to the county’s Registrar Shani Shorter.

Workers began the process by sorting the primary ballots into three colored bins in the voting room: red for Republican, blue for Democrat, and yellow for ballots that are considered challenged.

Challenged ballots include those with all circles filled in (overvote), no circles filled in (undervote), or other irregularities.

The release said the Republican ballots will be fed into voting machines that will tabulate the results, focusing solely on the congressional race.

The challenged ballots will be taken to Goochland County, where a three-judge panel will make the final determination, according to Shorter.

Shorter and the county’s Circuit Court Clerk Angie Reece Harris will travel to Goochland County with those ballots.

In all, 5,862 Republican ballots were cast in the June 18 primary, according to Shorter.

Individuals from both the Good and McGuire campaigns were in the room acting as observers.

Good’s campaign is funding the recount as McGuire led by a 0.6% margin.

The release added that recounts in races with less than a 0.5% margin are paid for by the localities.
