HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A wanted man was taken into custody following a vehicle pursuit in Henry County on August 24.

The incident began around 7:40 a.m. when a deputy tried to stop a 2006 Volkswagen on A.L. Philpott Highway near Gordon Trent Golf Course.

The driver, later identified as Gary Lawrence Johnson Jr., 54, of Stuart, ignored the lights and siren, accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour and drove recklessly, a news release said.

As the pursuit neared the golf course, the deputy performed a precision immobilization technique, causing the Volkswagen to lose traction and slide into a ditch in the median.

Johnson was arrested without further incident, according to authorities.

Johnson, who was already wanted on an outstanding failure-to-appear warrant from Henry County, now faces additional charges, including:

  • Felony eluding police
  • Driving without a license
  • Expired inspection
  • Fail to display tag
  • Fictitious registration
  • Fail to signal

He is currently held in the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond.

The investigation is ongoing.
