DANVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — Two juveniles have been charged in two separate threat investigations at Danville schools on September 16.

The Danville Police Department was alerted to a threat written in a restroom at George Washington High School.

The school resource officer responded, and members of the investigations bureau were called to assist.

A photo of the threat was posted on social media and led to further threats implying possible violence at local schools being spread with the intent to force the closure of schools, according to police.

Police launched investigations into the threats, working throughout the night to trace digital leads and interview individuals connected to the incidents.

After the investigation, authorities determined that none of the threats posed a credible danger to Danville Public Schools.

Two juveniles were charged in connection with the threats.

A 16-year-old student at George Washington High School was charged with making threats of death or bodily injury on school property.

Investigators revealed the student was upset with school employees, and no threat to other students was discovered.

A 12-year-old student at Bonner Middle School was charged with making threats to bomb or damage buildings, providing false information about the danger.

Authorities determined that the student never intended to harm anyone but wanted to continue the trend of threats within the schools in hopes of having schools closed.

“Making threats in writing on property, verbally, or via social media platforms and digital devices that cause fear of bodily harm or death are illegal and a serious criminal act,” the police department said in an article on their website. “The Danville Police Department vigorously investigates all these threats to determine the validity of the threat, then takes steps to stop any threat to human life in each case we are made aware of. When these threats are made the outcome will be a criminal prosecution.”

Police ask that parents and guardians explain the serious legal implications to their children to deter them from making threats in any form.
