HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A high-speed chase in Henry County ended with two men being arrested and a deputy being injured on September 21.

The incident began around 2:11 p.m. when a deputy recognized a white Buick that had been involved in a larceny at a local business.

The vehicle, going south on Greensboro Road, had mismatched license tags, which lead the deputy to initiate a traffic stop, according to authorities.

Instead of stopping, the Buick accelerated and began driving recklessly.

The chase continued at high speeds along Greensboro Road, eventually turning onto Main Street and then onto Morehead Avenue.

As the vehicle got to the intersection of Vista View Lane, a deputy performed a P.I.T. maneuver, causing the Buick to lose traction and slide into an embankment.

The sheriff’s office said that while approaching the suspect’s vehicle, the deputy was injured when the car rolled forward, pinning his leg between the vehicles.

The driver, identified as Carlton Lewis Haizlip, 35, of Ridge Avenue in Eden, North Carolina, fled from the scene on foot.

The injured deputy was taken to SOVAH Health in Martinsville, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

The deputy is expected to make a full recovery, according to the sheriff’s office.

Two other occupants were found in the Buick, including Ronald Haizlip, who had an outstanding warrant from Eden, N.C., for eluding police.

He was arrested and is currently in the Henry County Adult Detention Center awaiting extradition.

The other passenger, a woman, was released without charges.

Further investigation revealed that Carlton Haizlip, after fleeing, had stolen a 2006 Saturn from a residence on Old Leaksville Road in Ridgeway.

Efforts to locate Haizlip led to his capture in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where local police arrested him without incident.

The stolen Saturn was also recovered in Myrtle Beach, authorities said.

Carlton Haizlip faces several charges, including:

  • Felony eluding police
  • Assault on law enforcement
  • Larceny of motor vehicle

This investigation is ongoing.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A high-speed pursuit on September 21 ended in a crash, leaving a deputy injured, one man under arrest, and a suspect at large.

Henry County authorities are searching for Carlton Haizlip, a Caucasian man from Eden, N.C., who fled on foot after the incident.

Haizlip was last seen wearing a white shirt and has tattoos covering both arms, Sheriff Wayne Davis told rbs news now.

The pursuit began when a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop near Rural King on Greensboro Road, after recognizing the vehicle’s license plate as linked to recent larcenies in the area.

Sheriff Davis said the tags did not match the vehicle.

Haizlip refused to stop and sped away, leading deputies on a chase.

The pursuit ended when a deputy performed a PIT maneuver on Morehead Avenue at Vista View Lane.

“He remained behind the wheel as our deputies got out to attempt to take him into custody, his vehicle continued forward, he actually struck one of our deputies who is currently being treated for a fairly significant injury here inside this rescue unit,” Davis said.

A deputy’s leg was pinned between the patrol vehicle and the suspect car and was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to Sheriff Davis.

A male passenger in the vehicle, who was wanted in North Carolina for felony eluding, was arrested at the scene.

Haizlip, however, fled on foot and was last near Staples Avenue in Ridgeway, prompting a manhunt.

Anyone with information about Carlton Haizlip’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at 276-638-8751 or Crimestoppers at 276-632-7463.
