HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A man is behind bars after a domestic disturbance in Henry County on September 18.

The incident occurred on Wright Road in Ridgeway and involved Richard John Smith and his wife, Jeanie Hawks Smith.

Authorities report that during a domestic altercation, Richard Smith allegedly brandished a firearm, threatening both his wife and her brother, Jimmy Hawks.

Smith is also accused of discharging the gun in their direction, preventing them from leaving the room.

During the confrontation, Richard reportedly demanded Jeanie’s cell phone and threatened to shoot her if she refused.

After about 30 minutes, Jeanie and Jimmy were able to escape and contact law enforcement.

Deputies responded to the scene and arrested Richard without incident.

He faces multiple charges, including:

• Shooting, stabbing with intent to maim, kill, etc.
• Abduction and kidnapping
• Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
• Shooting into an occupied dwelling
• Robbery

Richard is currently being held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond.
