PATRICK COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — The Patrick County Sheriff’s Office celebrated the official retirement of Sergeant Winfred Hill on October 9.

Sergeant Hill, who joined the department on September 21, 1996, demonstrated professionalism and dedication throughout his tenure, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

He was a supervisor in the patrol division and was a member of the special weapons and tactics team, along with being one of the department’s police snipers.

Since 2001, he trained over a thousand officers in the region in defensive tactics.

Sergeant Hill is the first African American to retire from the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office.

“To say Winfred left a positive mark on our agency is an understatement,” the post read. “Help us congratulate Winfred on his well deserved retirement and wish him the best in his next chapter of life.”
