EDEN, N.C. (rbs news now) — The Eden Police Department is raising awareness about a national trend of auto thefts targeting Kia and Hyundai vehicles.

Thieves are taking it advantage of a vulnerability in the ignition systems of these vehicles, allowing them to start them using devices such as USB cords or pliers.

To combat the issue, Kia and Hyundai are offering a free anti-theft software update for affected models, along with complimentary steering wheel locks.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to visit the following manufacturer websites to access these resources:

Click here for Hyundai and here for Kia.

Eden Police also emphasize basic vehicle safety measures:

• Lock your vehicle

• Remove keys, remote keys, and valuables

• Be vigilant, as most thefts stem from unlocked cars
