HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — The Henry County Board of Supervisors has approved a motion to extend the county’s personal property tax deadline to February 5, 2025.

The extension, approved on November 26, was requested by Commissioner of the Revenue Tiffany Hairston due to delays in generating the billing file for this year.

In a memo, Hairston cited efforts to ensure unregistered vehicles were not improperly charged the county’s motor vehicle license (MVL) fee as a primary cause of the delay.

The MVL fee applies to vehicles, trailers, and semitrailers capable of being operated on road in the county.

The fee is $20.75 per vehicle, with motorcycles and trailers charged $12.

Hairston noted that approximately 4,000 vehicles still required the MVL fee to be removed as of late October.

Additionally, about 3,000 vehicles required manual assessment.

Hairston reported her office has evaluated over 76,000 pieces of personal property this year, an increase of nearly 5,000 vehicles compared to last year.

Residents can also expect changes in the format of their personal property tax bills.

New features include a breakdown of taxed machinery and tools, listings for mobile homes, and vehicle identification numbers.

Hairston anticipates finalizing the billing file for the treasurer’s office by December 13.

Residents who receive bills mistakenly including an MVL fee for unregistered vehicles are asked to contact the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office at 276-634-4690.
