PATRICK COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A Stuart man was airlifted to a hospital on January 23 after being shot during an incident.

The incident started when Griffith Coy Goodyear, 34, of Salem Highway, arrived at the home of James Hazelwood, 78, located in the 3300 block of Big A School Road in Stuart.

Authorities said Hazelwood reported seeing Goodyear beating his vehicle with an iron pipe.

Hazelwood called 9-1-1 around 8:30 a.m. to report the disturbance.

According to Hazelwood, Goodyear then approached the residence armed with the pipe, smashing several windows and breaking down the front door.

At that point, Hazelwood fired a single shot from a .38-caliber handgun, striking Goodyear, according to authorities.

Goodyear went to his vehicle and began backing down the driveway, where deputies encountered him as he entered Big A School Road.

Deputies said they rendered aid until Goodyear was airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

His condition is currently unknown.

Authorities stated that Hazelwood and Goodyear were past acquaintances, and a permanent protective order is on file against Goodyear to have no contact with Hazelwood.

The protective order, initiated by Hazelwood, was served on Goodyear on April 26, 2024, and remains active until April 2026.

The Patrick County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an ongoing investigation with assistance from the Patrick County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
