FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — An 8-year-old child was found dead at a home in Rocky Mount, leading to the arrest of the child’s father and stepmother.

Authorities received a call around 6 p.m. on February 8 regarding an unconscious and unresponsive child.

Emergency responders arrived at a residence in the 100 block of Circle View Street, where they pronounced the child dead at the scene.

Following an investigation, the child’s father, Michael Eugene Everson, 46, and stepmother, Mary Marie Everson, 32, were taken into custody.

Both have been charged with one felony count of child abuse and neglect resulting in serious injury, while Mary Everson faces an additional misdemeanor charge of simple assault against a family member.

Both suspects are being held without bond.

The child’s body has been sent to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed.
