
DANVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — Lucas Jason Degier, 47, of Wilmington, North Carolina, is facing additional charges in connection with the February 2025 shooting of Danville Police Officer Kayla Robinson.
Degier has been formally charged with malicious wounding, arson, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
These charges come in addition to the initial charge of attempted capital murder.
The incident occurred while Officer Robinson was interviewing Degier as a suspect in a hit-and-run crash.
During the interview, police say Degier opened fire, critically injuring Robinson.
Degier is being held without bond in the Danville City Jail.
Danville Police said no additional information will be released at this time as the investigation continues.

UPDATE — February 23

DANVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — Authorities have charged a 47-year-old man from Wilmington, N.C. in an officer-involved shooting in Danville.
The incident occurred on February 17 in the parking lot of a hotel in the 2100 block of Riverside Drive.
Lucas Jason Degier shot Danville Police Department Officer Kayla Robinson while being interviewed as a suspect in a hit-and-run crash, according to Virginia State Police.
Following the incident, Degier was flown to Duke University Hospital for treatment of his wounds sustained during the shooting.
He is facing a charge of attempted capital murder.
Degier is currently being held in North Carolina and will be extradited to Virginia to stand trial for the shooting.
City and state police said no further comments will be made regarding the shooting.
Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be turned over to the Danville Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for adjudication.

ORIGINAL STORY — February 17

DANVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — A Danville police officer and a suspect were injured in a shooting on the afternoon of February 17.
According to the Danville Police Department, a uniformed officer located a suspect vehicle connected to a prior hit-and-run in the parking lot of a hotel in the 2100 block of Riverside Drive.
While questioning the suspect, a 47-year-old white male who is not a Danville resident, the man suddenly pulled out a firearm and began shooting at the officer, striking the officer multiple times.
The officer returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times, according to police.
Responding officers provided medical care to both the officer and the suspect.
The wounded officer was taken directly to SOVAH Health Danville before being transported by helicopter to a regional trauma center, where they remain in stable condition.
The suspect was also flown out for further treatment.
At the request of Danville Police, the Virginia State Police have taken over the investigation.
The names of the officer and the suspect are being withheld at this time, following department policy to protect the identities of officers involved in shooting incidents for 72 hours.
