HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A man wanted on multiple charges was arrested on March 13 after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through Henry County.

Deputies spotted a white Chevrolet Equinox driving at a high speed and going onto oncoming traffic on Stultz Road in Collinsville at around 10 a.m.

The vehicle matched the description of one associated with Gregory Yuron Campbell, 52, who was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants in both Martinsville and Henry County.

Deputies identified Campbell as the driver and tried a traffic stop, but he refused to stop, starting a pursuit through the Collinsville, Fieldale, and Bassett areas, according to Sheriff Wayne Davis.

During the chase, deputies found a woman on the side of Sunset Drive who appeared injured, Sheriff Davis said.

The woman told authorities that Campbell had taken control of her vehicle after she offered him a ride and refused to let her out.

When the vehicle slowed, she managed to escape by jumping from it.

She was treated at the scene for minor injuries, the sheriff said.

A short time later, deputies found the SUV crashed into a retaining wall at in the 1100 block of Sunset Drive.

The vehicle had caught fire, and Campbell was seen fleeing on foot.

Deputies, Virginia State Police, and a sheriff’s office K-9 unit pursued Campbell into a wooded area, where he was taken into custody without further incident.

Sheriff Davis actively joined the incident, even getting his uniform dirty while apprehending the suspect.

Campbell was transported to SOVAH Health in Martinsville for minor injuries, treated, and released.

He was then booked into the Henry County Adult Detention Center with no bond.

Campbell, of Willow Court, Martinsville, now faces multiple new charges, including abduction by force (felony), felony eluding police, and hit and run – attended vehicle (felony).

He was also served with outstanding warrants from Martinsville City and Henry County for probation violations, credit fraud, credit card larceny, and petit larceny.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A suspect led law enforcement on a high-speed chase through Henry County before crashing and fleeing on foot on March 13.

Henry County Sheriff Wayne Davis said the pursuit began when a deputy spotted a vehicle speeding on the wrong side of the road in Collinsville.

“When they attempted a traffic stop, the driver accelerated away, leading them on a fairly lengthy high-speed pursuit through Collinsville, Fieldale, and ultimately here into the Bassett community,” Sheriff Davis told rbs news now at the scene.

The chase ended when the driver lost control and crashed a white Chevrolet Equinox in the 1100 block of Sunset Drive, damaging private property.

The vehicle caught fire, and the suspect fled on foot before being apprehended about half a mile away.

Authorities are also investigating a possible abduction linked to the incident.

Davis said deputies noticed a woman lying in the grass on the side of Sunset Road during the pursuit.

“She did not receive any major injuries, but her allegation at this time is that she somewhat knew the driver, an acquaintance of sorts,” The sheriff said. “She alleges that once on Sunset, she was able to jump from the vehicle as it slowed, and then he ultimately wrecked here.”

Sheriff Davis was in the Collinsville area when the incident began and actively joined the pursuit, even getting his uniform dirty while apprehending the suspect.

The suspect, who has not yet been named, will face charges including reckless driving and felony eluding.

Additional charges, including abduction and motor vehicle theft, may follow pending further investigation.

The suspect was also wanted on multiple outstanding felony warrants.

The investigation remains ongoing.
