RIDGEWAY, Va. (rbs news now) — Firefighters possibly saved a home from being destroyed on March 18 after a brush fire spread to a nearby barn.
The fire broke out in the 4900 block of Horsepasture Price Road.
According to Ridgeway Fire Chief A.J. Goins, the blaze began as a brush fire but quickly spread to a barn nearby.
While the barn was destroyed, firefighters were able to stop the flames before they reached the nearby home.
“The fire was very close to the house,” Fire Chief Goins told rbs news now. “Thankfully, crews were able to contain it in time.”
Goins took the opportunity to remind the public of Virginia’s annual burn ban, which is in effect until April 30.
The law prohibits open-air burning prior to 4 p.m., but burning is allowed between 4 p.m. and midnight, provided proper precautions are taken and the fire is attended at all times.
“Fires can spread quickly this time of year, especially with the dry and windy conditions,” The fire chief said. “We ask everyone to follow the burn ban law and use caution.”
Volunteer fire departments from Fieldale, Ridgeway, Horsepasture, and Bassett responded to the scene.
Henry County Public Safety and the Virginia Department of Forestry also assisted in battling the blaze.
No injuries were reported.
