MARTINSVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — The Martinsville Police Department is warning residents about a recent increase in gift card scams.

In a Facebook post on March 24, the department reported seeing an uptick in scams where fraudsters demand payment in gift cards.

Police said that if someone receives a call, message, or other communication prequesting payment via gift card, it is almost always a scam.

“Simply say no,” the department advised.

Authorities also reminded the public to never share the numbers on the back of gift cards, as scammers can immediately drain the funds once they have access to the card information.

“If you ever have any suspicions or questions, please reach out to us at the police department at 276-403-5300 or the non-emergency dispatch number at 276-638-8751,” the post stated.
