FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident that led to a temporary lockdown at Franklin County High School on April 1.

According to a statement from the schools’ Superintendent Dr. Kevin Siers, the high school entered a “shelter in place” status for approximately 30 minutes after a handgun was discovered on campus.

The sheriff’s office and the Rocky Mount Police Department responded, and a student was taken into custody.

To ensure continued safety, an increased police presence will remain at the school for the rest of the day, Dr. Siers said.

“As always, the safety and security of our students and employees remains the top priority for the school division and local law enforcement,” the superintendent stated.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
