ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. (rbs news now) — Joey Robertson, a longtime law enforcement officer and Rockingham County native, has announced his candidacy for sheriff.

In an April 28 Facebook post Robertson pledged to prioritize accountability, school safety, and community-based policing.

Robertson said he will work to strengthen trust between the sheriff’s office and citizens through transparency and daily efforts to improve performance.

“A good sheriff creates a positive environment where others feel valued and trusted,” Robertson said.

He wrote in the post that protecting neighborhoods and businesses, improving response times, and investing in youth through trained school resource officers are key elements of his platform.

Robertson also promised to reform operations at the county’s detention center and expand efforts to keep impaired drivers and violent criminals off the streets.

A 40-year law enforcement veteran, Robertson served 28 years with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and nearly a decade with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.

He currently works as a School Resource Officer with the Madison Police Department.

“I am committed to making Rockingham County the safest county in North Carolina,” Robertson said.
