RICHMOND, Va. (rbs news now) — Anglers across Virginia can cast a line without a license during Free Fishing Days, set for June 6 to 8.
For three days, residents and visitors alike can enjoy recreational rod-and-reel fishing in Virginia’s rivers, lakes, and streams without needing a fishing license or facility use permit.
The event, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), encourages Virginians to experience the outdoors and introduce others to the sport of fishing—whether it’s chasing stripers on the coast or trout in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
In a boost to angling access this year, the DWR has lifted restrictions on fishing designated stocked trout waters for the weekend, opening up more than 2,900 miles of trout streams along with numerous ponds, small lakes, and reservoirs.
Virginia’s diverse trout habitats offer plentiful opportunities for beginners and seasoned anglers alike.
While licenses and access permits are waived, all other fishing regulations—including size limits, season restrictions, catch limits, and gear rules—will remain in effect.
DWR fee fishing areas will still require a separate fee even during Free Fishing Days.
To find a nearby fishing spot or learn more about regulations, the DWR encourages anglers to visit Explore the Wild.
