REIDSVILLE, N.C. (rbs news now) — Authorities in Reidsville are actively searching for Dexter Lamar Scales Sr., 45, who is wanted on two counts of first-degree murder in connection with a double homicide that occurred earlier this month.

Police Chief Ray Gibson issued a stern public statement on June 24.

“If you aid or harbor Dexter Lamar Scales Sr. in any way, you will be charged and arrested,” Gibson said. “The best thing is for Dexter Lamar Scales Sr. to turn himself in to the nearest law enforcement agency and tell his side of the story.”

On June 12, officers responded to a report of gunfire in the 500 block of Roach Street.

Upon arrival, officers said they found Samuel L. Brooks, 42, and Shanika D. Penn, 37, both of Reidsville, who were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are asking for any eyewitness accounts, doorbell or surveillance video, or relevant information from the area between 11 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. on the night of the incident.

A combined reward of up to $7,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of Scales.

Chief Gibson thanked the community for tips received so far and encouraged continued cooperation. “The families of the victims deserve justice,” he said.

Scales remains at large and is considered dangerous, according to police.

ORIGINAL STORY — June 13

REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Two people are dead following a late-night shooting on Roach Street, according to the Reidsville Police Department.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 500 block of Roach Street at around 11:55 p.m. on June 12.

Upon arrival, police said they found two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds and attempted lifesaving measures.

Rockingham County EMS arrived on the scene shortly after and pronounced both victims dead.

The victims have been identified as 42-year-old Samuel L. Brooks and 37-year-old Shanika D. Penn, both of Reidsville.

Police say they have developed a person of interest in the case but are not releasing that information at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
