MARTINSVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — The City of Martinsville has released its 2024 water quality report, announcing that no violations of state or federal drinking water standards were found during the calendar year.
The report says that the city’s drinking water met or exceeded all safety requirements set by the Virginia Department of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The city’s primary source of raw water is the Beaver Creek Reservoir, with supplemental water coming from Leatherwood Creek when needed.
Before reaching homes and businesses, the water undergoes a treatment process at the Martinsville Water Treatment Plant, including disinfection, pH adjustment, and filtration.
The 2024 results show that levels of fluoride, chlorine, and other common byproducts of water treatment were well within federal limits.
No violations of Primary Maximum Contaminant Levels were reported, and all routine testing met compliance benchmarks.
The city also monitored for contaminants like lead, copper, and microbial pathogens, with no adverse findings.
According to the report, trace levels of naturally occurring elements such as sodium and hardness minerals were present, which is normal for treated surface water sources.
While Martinsville’s water quality remained high, the report advises residents to take precautions with in-home plumbing.
Lead, which can leach from old pipes and fixtures, remains a health concern.
Residents are encouraged to run water for several minutes before consumption and use certified filters if necessary.
Residents with questions or concerns can contact the Water Resources Department at 276-403-5154 or attend regularly scheduled city council meetings, held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
