CALLAWAY, Va. (rbs news now) — A swift water rescue in the early hours of June 17 prevented a potentially tragic outcome after floodwaters trapped a driver inside their vehicle in Franklin County.

At around 1 a.m., the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a vehicle submerged in rising water with an occupant trapped inside.

Although the initial location provided was incorrect, emergency responders located the vehicle in the 6600 block of Callaway Road, where heavy rainfall had flooded the area.

Rescue crews said they acted quickly and pulled the driver to safety just moments before the vehicle was swept away by the current.

Franklin County Fire & EMS personnel evaluated the individual on scene.

No injuries were reported.

In a statement shared on social media, the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department thanked all those involved, including the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office telecommunications dispatchers, who played a key role in pinpointing the correct location of the stranded vehicle.

“We’re thankful for the quick response and teamwork of all personnel — this could have had a much different outcome,” the department said. “Please use caution as you travel today. Several roadways remain submerged, and additional rainfall is expected. Stay alert and weather aware.”
