HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A powerful thunderstorm that swept through Martinsville and Henry County on July 9 caused widespread damage and power outages.

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the area at 3:52 p.m., citing a storm located over Fieldale and moving northeast at 25 miles per hour.

Forecasters warned of large hail, damaging winds, intense lightning, and the potential for flash flooding in low-lying areas.

Satellite imagery showed towering cumulus clouds shooting into the atmosphere as the storm rapidly intensified.

Residents were urged to seek shelter away from windows.

The storm caused trees to fall across several locations, with reports of at least two homes and one shed struck as of 9 p.m.

Affected areas include Joseph Martin Highway, Old Liberty Drive, Meadowview Lane, Mulberry Road, Rivermont Heights, and Greensboro Road.

Julian Mei, a member of the Martinsville City Council, confirmed that city crews are working in storm-affected neighborhoods, including Lanier Road, Meadowview Lane, and the Kenmar area.

Power restoration is currently estimated by 2 a.m. on July 10.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

Residents are reminded to remain cautious around downed power lines and fallen trees.
