DANVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — The City of Danville is reminding residents to stop dumping furniture, mattresses, and household trash at drop-off recycling centers.

Officials warn that such actions are illegal, environmentally harmful, and costly for taxpayers.

“This is not recycling—it’s illegal dumping,” city officials said in a Facebook post, accompanied by a photo showing discarded bulk items piled at one of Danville’s recycling sites.

Recycling centers throughout the city are intended strictly for recyclable materials.

When non-recyclable items such as household trash are left at these sites or in recycling bins, the entire load is contaminated and must be sent to a landfill, according to the post.

The city offers proper disposal options for both trash and bulk items:

Household trash and bulk waste should be placed curbside in city-issued carts on regular collection days.

To schedule a bulk pickup for large items such as furniture or mattresses, residents can call public works at 434-799-5245.

Recyclable materials accepted at drop-off centers include:

  • #1 and #2 plastics (clear and colored bottles/jugs)
  • Steel/tin cans
  • Aluminum cans
  • Mixed paper, newspaper, and cardboard

Prohibited materials include plastic bags, Styrofoam, garden hoses, and plastic toys.

Recycling bins are located at:

  • Danville Mall (Southwest corner)
  • Tractor Supply at Kings Fairground Plaza
  • Ballou Park Shopping Center South
  • Boston Road/Halifax Road (across from public works)

Dumping at recycling centers is a violation of city ordinances and may result in fines.

Officials encourage residents to do their part to keep Danville clean and safe.
