PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A man drowned on July 20 near the Leesville Lake Dam in Pittsylvania County.

Authorities received a call reporting a possible drowning in the 3000 block of Gallows Road in Gretna at approximately 2:38 p.m.

The caller indicated that an individual had entered the water and did not resurface.

First responders from multiple agencies, including the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, arrived at the scene and started a rescue operation.

Divers entered the lake in an attempt to locate the missing man.

According to authorities, the man had been visiting the area with friends when he entered the water and disappeared.

Friends attempted to find him but were unsuccessful.

Rescue efforts eventually turned into a recovery mission.

Divers located the victim’s body and he was pronounced dead at the scene by rescue personnel shortly before 7 p.m.

The body will be transported to the chief medical examiner’s office for further examination.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending confirmation of next-of-kin.
