HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — Henry County has appointed Tim Duffer as its next Director of Public Safety, effective August 1.
A seasoned emergency management professional with more than 30 years of experience, Duffer will succeed longtime Director Matt Tatum, who is set to retire July 31.
“We are excited to welcome Tim to our leadership team,” said County Administrator Dale Wagoner. “His depth of experience in emergency response, public safety infrastructure, and strategic planning make him exceptionally well-suited to carry forward the strong legacy of service that Director Tatum leaves behind.”
Duffer currently serves as Deputy Fire Chief for the Danville Fire Department, where he oversees the city’s 9-1-1 communications center and manages department accreditation.
During his tenure, he has helped secure more than $1.5 million in federal funding, led major system upgrades, and coordinated recovery efforts after Tropical Storm Michael, according to a news release.
His past leadership of Regional One EMS as Director and Chief saw the agency’s workforce triple in size and emergency communications expand to 24/7 coverage.

The release said his innovative approaches helped position the organization for acquisition and long-term sustainability.
“I am honored to serve Henry County in this role,” Duffer said. “Public safety is about more than emergency response. It’s about collaboration, preparedness, and community trust. I look forward to building on the outstanding work already in place and ensuring the residents of Henry County continue to feel protected and supported.”
In addition to his professional career, Duffer has held volunteer roles including Fire Chief of Blairs Volunteer Fire and Rescue.
He has also contributed to regional emergency planning and legislative efforts, the release said.
Duffer holds a master of science in emergency management from Walden University and a bachelor of science in fire protection administration from Eastern Kentucky University.
His certifications include Fire Officer 4, EMT-P, and Haz-Mat Specialist.
Henry County officials thanked Matt Tatum for his decades of service and leadership in public safety.
