PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A 17-year-old was killed Monday night in a head-on crash caused by a vehicle fleeing from police.
The fatal crash occurred on August 4 at around 9:21 p.m. along Route 29, just south of R and L Smith Lane in Pittsylvania County.
According to Virginia State Police, a trooper attempted to stop a Kia SUV for speeding — 73 mph in a 55 mph zone — in Halifax County.
The driver of the Kia, Alton Willie Devone Wade, 26, of Gum Spring, refused to stop and led authorities on a pursuit into Pittsylvania County.
State Police say Wade then began driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 29, only covering a short distance before crashing head-on into a Ford Focus that was legally going south.

The driver of the Ford Focus, 17-year-old Nelson Michael Smith, from Providence, North Carolina, was wearing his seatbelt but died at the scene from his injuries.
Wade was seriously injured and airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Two passengers in the Kia were taken to Sovah Health in Danville with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say Wade has been charged in connection with Smith’s death, along with several additional charges related to the pursuit.
Details on those charges have not yet been released.
The investigation remains ongoing.
