BASSETT, Va. (rbs news now) — A high-speed chase involving a stolen U-Haul truck ended in a crash on Wednesday night.

Lieutenant Justin Willard of the Martinsville Police Department and one of the watch commanders on duty said officers were patrolling near Liberty Street in Martinsville when the pursuit began around 8:15 p.m. on August 20.

“An officer saw a U-Haul pull out in front of another vehicle and then had some erratic driving. The officer got behind the vehicle to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop. After running the information on the U-Haul, it came back as stolen,” Lieutenant Willard told rbs news now at the scene.

The pursuit continued into Henry County, where the U-Haul crashed into an embankment at the intersection of Fairy Stone Park Highway and Bassett Heights Road in Bassett.

Willard said the driver initially refused commands to exit the vehicle.

“They backed up the U-Haul and struck one of the patrol vehicles in the side and then put it back in drive and struck the embankment again,” Willard said. “At that time, with assistance from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, they were able to take a male and a female into custody without any further incident.”

No injuries were reported.

Charges are pending against the two involved.

Virginia State Police were called to investigate the crash since it occurred in Henry County.
