PATRICK COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A man is in custody following a Monday morning standoff and shooting with Patrick County deputies.

Around 8 a.m., deputies were called to the 3600 block of Willis Gap Road in Ararat after a report that a man was assaulting his elderly father.

Deputies arrived and tried to make contact at the residence.

An elderly woman answered the door as a man approached her from behind and swung a baseball bat at her, according to authorities.

Deputies pulled her to safety while the suspect barricaded himself inside the home.

Additional Patrick County deputies and Carroll County deputies were called to assist.

Authorities said they tried to call the man out of the house when he appeared from a partially concealed position at a front window, brandished a handgun and fired at deputies through the glass.

Deputies returned fire.

The suspect, 40-year-old Jason Chilton, of the address, was the only remaining occupant of the home at the time and was taken into custody about 20 minutes later.

Chilton sustained minor injuries, and no deputies were hurt, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said his father had fled to a neighbor’s house before deputies arrived.

Chilton was charged with attempted malicious wounding and two counts of domestic assault and battery.

Charges resulting from the shooting involving law enforcement are forthcoming from Virginia State Police.

Chilton is being held without bond in the Patrick County Jail.

As with all deputy-involved shootings, the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations will handle the investigation.
