HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A 19-year-old man has turned himself in after a shooting that injured two people outside the Dollar General on Monday night.
According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Charles Edward Mills surrendered to deputies at around 9:30 p.m. on October 7.
He was taken into custody without incident and is being held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond.
Mills is charged with two counts of malicious wounding, two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and one count of attempted robbery.
The shooting occurred October 6 in the parking lot on the side of the building of the Dollar General on Stones Dairy Road, away from the store’s main entrance.

Investigators say two men were struck by gunfire and that evidence shows shots were exchanged between the victims and at least one other suspect.
According to a previous rbs news now report, then 18-year-old Mills, who was a student at Bassett High School, was arrested on November 20, 2024, for bringing a firearm to the school.

ORIGINAL STORY — October 6

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — Authorities say an exchange of gunfire between two groups led to a shooting Monday night outside a Dollar General in Henry County that left two men injured.
The call came out at around 7:45 p.m. October 6 reporting shots fired at the Dollar General at 3874 Stones Dairy Road in Bassett.
Callers told dispatchers that two people had been struck by gunfire.
Deputies found two men, ages 20 and 21, suffering from gunshot wounds on the side of the building away from the main shopping entrance.
Captain Sandy Hines told rbs news now at the scene that one of the victims was in stable condition, while the other was airlifted for treatment of their injuries.
Sheriff Wayne Davis said investigators believe at least a dozen shots were exchanged between the two victims and another group of individuals.

“The evidence shows that they met in the far back left corner of the parking lot,” Davis said. “At some point, gunshots were fired in that area. We know the two people in the black vehicle near the entrance of the Dollar General were shot, but evidence also shows that someone inside that vehicle was firing out of the car.”
Davis said the incident appears to have been an isolated act of violence between the two groups and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Investigators believe the victims were traveling together in a black vehicle and met with another group in a small white vehicle, which has not yet been identified.
Deputies said they interviewed witnesses and collected multiple pieces of evidence at the scene.
No arrests have been made.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at 276-638-8751 or Crime Stoppers at 276-632-7463.
