PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to stay alert as deputies continue to search for a man considered armed and dangerous following a domestic-related shooting Monday afternoon near Hurt.

Sheriff Mike Taylor said deputies were dispatched around 12:02 p.m. to a home in the 3600 block Shula Drive after receiving a report of gunfire.

“Once deputies arrived, they discovered that an incident had occurred, it was domestic in nature, and that a protective order had been violated,” Sheriff Taylor told rbs news now.

The suspect, 59-year-old Ellis Wayne Lambert Jr. of Flat Top Cove Road, reportedly fled into nearby woods after the altercation.

Deputies say shots were fired during a fight between family members, and investigators believe Lambert may have been struck.

A K9 team later found a small amount of blood, though deputies said it was not a significant amount.

Lambert is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 195 pounds, with green eyes, gray hair, and a gray beard.

He was last seen on foot on Shula Drive wearing full camouflage clothing.

A five-square-mile perimeter has been established as the search continues, involving multiple agencies including the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, Town of Hurt Police Department, Gretna Police Department, Altavista Police Department, Danville Life Saving Crew, and Pittsylvania County Public Safety.

“We’ve been here since about noon, and we’ll continue to look until we can either determine someone has picked him up and carried him away from this location or we find him,” Taylor said.

He added that Lambert “should be considered armed and dangerous” and urged the public not to approach him.

Authorities say warrants have been issued for Lambert on charges including violating a protective order, brandishing a firearm, and possessing a firearm while a protective order is in effect.

He is also wanted for failure to appear in Pittsylvania County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Anyone who spots Lambert or has information on his whereabouts is asked not to approach him and to call 9-1-1 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-791-0044.

Tipsters may remain anonymous and could receive up to a $5,000 cash reward upon his arrest and conviction.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become available.
