DANVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — A Danville man has been arrested after police said he assaulted two people and brandished a firearm Thursday afternoon on Main Street.

Shortly before on October 16, officers responded to a business in the 200 block of Main Street for a reported assault in which the suspect displayed a handgun.

According to police, two victims told officers that a Black male wearing an orange coverall suit, black hat, and glasses approached them, believing they had laughed at him.

The suspect allegedly made verbal threats, pulled out a handgun, and struck one of the victims before leaving the area on foot.

No shots were fired, and the victim’s injuries were described as minor.

The Danville Police Department released surveillance photographs of the suspect and asked for the public’s help identifying him.

Within 24 hours, investigators identified and arrested James Chappell, 61, in connection with the incident.

Police said Chappell is charged with two counts of brandishing a firearm and one count of simple assault.

The department thanked the public for their assistance in identifying Chappell.
