DANVILLE, Va. (rbs news now) — Danville Police announced on Oct. 24 the arrests of two men in connection with fentanyl distribution investigations as the city continues to see declines in overdose cases.

Vice-Narcotics investigators recently arrested 25-year-old Brandon Christopher Burke and 25-year-old Tiyon Rayquan Smith, both of Danville.

Each faces charges of possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute and possessing fentanyl as a weapon of terrorism under Virginia law.

The arrests are part of the department’s ongoing strategy to combat the distribution of dangerous drugs including fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, meth, and xylazine—substances linked to overdose deaths in the community.

Police said the city has seen a 37% reduction in opioid-related overdoses and a 30% drop in fatal overdoses so far in 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

Those declines follow a 63% reduction in overdose cases and a 47% drop in fatal overdoses from 2024 compared to 2023.

While officers aim to connect individuals struggling with addiction to treatment rather than jail, the department said it remains “aggressive and focused” on investigating drug distributors.

Authorities also warned the community that fentanyl is often mixed with xylazine, a veterinary tranquilizer that cannot be reversed by naloxone, an overdose reversal drug carried by all Danville officers.

Anyone with information about illegal drug distribution or seeking help for substance abuse is encouraged to contact the Danville Police Department.
