BASSETT, Va. (rbs news now) — A standoff in Bassett ended late Tuesday night with three people taken into custody after deputies located a wanted man hiding inside a footlocker.

Deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant at 607 Longview Drive and could hear individuals inside the home, but no one would answer the door.

After several unsuccessful attempts to get the occupants to exit, deputies obtained a search warrant, and the SWAT team responded to assist.

SWAT personnel said they made repeated announcements for the individuals to leave the home.

About three hours later, one person came out and was taken into custody.

Deputies then entered the home and located the remaining suspects.

Authorities said Derrick Lyn Phillippe, 39, was found hiding inside a footlocker with household items stacked on top to conceal him.

Phillippe faces several charges, including obstruction of justice in Henry County and multiple drug and probation violations in Franklin County.

He is being held without bond.

Sarah Burnette Foster, 37, was charged with obstruction of justice and was released on a $2,000 bond.

Levi Enoch Dunmire, 38, was arrested on four probation violation charges and is also being held without bond.

Henry County Sheriff Wayne Davis praised the deputies and SWAT team for their professionalism during the operation.

“Our deputies and SWAT personnel displayed professionalism and patience throughout this incident,” Davis said. “Their methodical approach ensured that the situation was resolved safely and without injury to anyone involved. I’m proud of their teamwork and dedication to protecting our community.”

BASSETT, Va. (rbs news now) — A standoff that lasted over four hours on Longview Drive in Bassett ended peacefully late Tuesday night, according to Henry County Sheriff Wayne Davis.

Deputies were called to the home around 9:20 p.m. on November 11 and worked through freezing overnight conditions to bring the situation to a safe resolution.

Sheriff Davis said three individuals were taken into custody from the residence — one woman, the homeowner, was charged with obstruction of justice, while another woman and a man were arrested early in the incident for a family probation violation.

A fourth person, identified as Derek Philippy, was wanted on multiple narcotics-related charges out of another county.

He was found hidden in a small container in the basement after deputies and the SWAT team made entry and conducted an extensive search.

Davis praised his deputies for their persistence and professionalism.

“First and foremost, I give the credit to God for a peaceful resolution,” he said. “Our team never gave up, even after hours in the cold.”

The standoff took place around the same time deputies were investigating a fatal shooting in the Axton area.

Both investigations remain ongoing.
