ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. (rbs news now) — A 47-year-old man died early Saturday after authorities say he fell into an active fire pit at his home in Rockingham County.
Deputies responded at 12:11 a.m. on November 29 to a reported death in the 300 block of Brushy Mountain Road in Stoneville.
When they arrived, first responders said they found Kenneth “Kenny” Dean Dalton in the backyard with severe burns across his body.
Fire personnel, EMS crews and investigators with the Rockingham County Fire Marshal’s Office also responded.

According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation determined Dalton sustained his injuries after falling into the fire pit.
The Rockingham County Medical Examiner responded to the scene.
At this stage of the investigation, authorities do not believe foul play was involved.
However, the sheriff’s office said the case remains open pending autopsy results due to the nature of the incident.
The Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office has been notified and is assisting.
