ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (rbs news now) — Multiple local and state agencies are investigating after numerous dead vultures were discovered in a creek bed on a wooded lot at Dent Street and Franklin Street.

Officials from Rocky Mount Police and Fire, Franklin County Public Safety, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), and the Virginia Department of Health are on scene Tuesday evening.

The area has been roped off with caution tape as a safety measure.

A DWR biologist is en route to examine the birds and determine how they died, authorities said.

Town officials said there is no threat to the municipal water supply.

The town’s water treatment plant does not draw water from the shallow creek where the birds were found, and the water system remains unaffected.

Out of an abundance of caution, residents are advised to avoid waterways in and around the impacted area until the assessment is complete and the site is cleared.

Additional information will be released as the investigation develops.
