PATRICK COUNTY, Va. (rbs news now) — A man died early Sunday after a fire engulfed a mobile home in the Patrick Springs area.

Authorities got a call around 3 a.m. on December 7 reporting a house fire on Memory Lane in Stuart.

Multiple fire departments were dispatched to the scene.

Patrick Springs Volunteer Fire Department said crews arrived to find a single-wide mobile home with an addition heavily involved in fire.

Firefighters conducted an aggressive search, including a vent-enter-search operation on the addition, which was the only area deemed searchable upon arrival.

The primary search of that space was negative.

The victim was later found deceased in the main portion of the home, which was fully involved by the time firefighters arrived, the department said.

“This is not the outcome we wanted,” the fire department said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and loved ones.”

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a male occupant was unable to escape and died inside the structure.

The victim’s name has not been released pending proper notification of family.

Agencies responding to the fire included Patrick Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Stuart Volunteer Fire Department, Moorefield Store Volunteer Fire Department, CCDF, Jeb Stuart Rescue, Patrick County Fire and EMS, the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office, and mutual aid units from Lawsonville and Northeast Stokes County in North Carolina.

Investigators from the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office are being assisted by Virginia State Police fire investigators to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Authorities said at this stage of the investigation, there is no indication the fire was malicious or suspicious.

The investigation remains ongoing.
