BASSETT, Va. (rbs news now) — One person is dead following an early morning house fire Monday in Bassett.

Crews were dispatched shortly before 5 a.m. in December 15 to a reported structure fire in the 200 block of Graceland Drive.

When firefighters arrived, they found a two-story home heavily involved in flames.

During a search of the structure, crews located the occupant deceased in the rear of the home, according to Bassett Volunteer Fire Department Chief Junior Lynch.

The house was declared a total loss and was ultimately leveled by the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire departments from Bassett, Patrick-Henry and Fieldale responded to the scene, along with Henry County Public Safety.
